”Be
my victim. Be my victim.”
First
appearing in 1992’s CandyMan, the
vengeful spirit with the hook hand wasn’t just an interesting figure – In many
ways he was unique. Candyman wasn’t just the normal slasher – It was a matter
of being believed in that sustained him, and the need to maintain the horror
and power of that belief which continued to drive him.
I rather
appreciated the concept and liked the first movie. I wasn’t a big fan of the
other two, but the first one was very cool and for me, it was the first
character since The Tall Man that had awesome lines.

Spirit:
The Candyman
is the earth-bound spirit of a murdered man whose entire purpose is to
perpetuate his own existence through his legend. The Candyman has several
unique powers which derive from his undead state, although only a fraction have
been revealed. These powers include:
- Ghostly State: The Candyman is immune to poison, toxins, and diseases, as well as not requiring to breathe, eat, or rest. The Candyman’s only real need is to be believed in, which maintains his presence in his home area and grants him his additional strength and powers. Even if reduced to 0 Health The Candyman is not destroyed so long as his community believes in him and his earthly effects are maintained.
- Summoning: The Candyman can be summoned by facing a mirror and saying his name five times in a row. By doing this the Candyman is drawn to the potential victim over Un (100) distance. Once a victim has summoned the Candyman, he may choose to wait or dispatch the victim immediately.
- Hooked Hand: As he was dismembered in life, the Candyman wears a hook where his right hand should be. The hook is considered a mystical edged weapon, capable of doing In (40) edged magic damage and halving effective protections.
- Mind Control: The Candyman can manipulate the minds of individuals, making them pass out or lose track of time with Rm (30) ability. The Candyman often ‘disappears’ from a person’s view or apparently turns invisible, setting the stage for a more horrific situation.
- Telekinesis: The Candyman can manipulate objects with Rm (30) intensity, capable of throwing objects, levitation, and other similar abilities (although seen mostly in the second and third movies).
- Insect Control: Bees: As the Candyman was mutilated, several Apiary hives were broken and the honey smeared over him. As such, the Candyman seems capable of controlling and manipulating large groups of bees with Rm (30) intensity. The Candyman can control bees to mass, attack, or appear whenever he does, and is usually a sign of his presence in a particular area.

Limitations:
The Candyman
has several limitations to his unique state, including:
- The need for belief: The Candyman requires belief in him to continue to exist, and murders for that purpose. Theoretically, the stronger the belief the more effective The Candyman becomes. When belief wanes (as seen in the first movie) The Candyman will go to great lengths to restore the belief. The Candyman is tied to his community, and considers them his followers.
- Selective Prey: In the first film, the Candyman choses to attack those who believe him to be nothing more than supernatural, proving a point in his existence. As such, The Candyman doesn’t usually attack those who simply don’t believe in him, but those that make an effort to disprove him.
- Terrifying Visage: The Candyman has a bloody hook for his right hand, with a skeletal-like torso under his great coat that has been stripped of flesh and inhabited by bees. Those seeing the full view of the Candyman are at a -1cs to reaction bonuses.
- Reputation: The Candyman is well known to his home community and is openly feared by citizens (explaining the higher negative popularity – Most everyone in The Candyman’s community are aware of him and are afraid of him…for good reason)
- Earthly Effects: In the two follow-up sequels, the Candyman is given a more elaborate backstory and showed to be tied to a mirror which is connected to his soul. As such, the destruction of the mirror which kills the Candyman or the destruction of his most famous painting. It is entirely up to the Judge if they wish to include this limitation.
Notes:
This was not an easy write-up. I placed The Candyman’s
Strength and Endurance as high as I did due to the fact of his actions from the
movies, clearly he was superhuman in both and seemed unfazed by his condition
or other elements. Secondly, Immunities are not ranked, as I’ve done with other
undead, I think that simply the dead are immune to some things. Third, the hook
– I consider it a mystical aspect of the Candyman, but I thought it should be
treated as weapon as it was used against him.
Also, it should be noted, that Tony Todd is amazing!
