Penny Dreadful - Do you believe there is a demimonde?

Debuting in 2014, Penny Dreadful  represented a different sort of show and was a dark contrast to how horror and period shows were done to that point. Gritty and full of references to the gothic horror that spawned it, Penny Dreadful re-imagined both the characters that were drawn from classic literature as well as the well-known folklore around such creatures. To say it was probably my favorite show of the last several decades would be an understatement. I've attempted to capture the elements of the characters in these write-ups and have a few more down the road.

Ethan Chandler (Played by Josh Harnett) - An American gunfighter hiding a deadly secret
Frankenstein's Monster (Played by Rory Kinnear) - the first creation of Dr. Frankenstein
Sir Malcolm Murray  (Played by Timothy Dalton) - An famed explorer and man of means
Vanessa Ives  (Played by Eva Green) - A family friend of Sir Malcolm's daughter, witch, and psychic.
Dr. Victor Frankenstein (Played by Harry Treadaway) - A physician and scientist obsessed with death.
Sembene (Played by Danny Sapani) - A mysterious figure and ally of the group tied to Sir Malcolm.
Dorian Gray (Played by Reeve Carney) - A youthful immortal who is ageless and sins without regret.
Lily Frankenstein (Played by Billie Piper) - The reanimated Brona Croft - powerful and dangerous

Talents

Knowledge: Law
Knowledge: International Law
Knowledge: London Area
Psi-Screen*

Powers
Madman and Vampire Thrall
Renfield is one of Count Dracula's first real 'London' victims. Rather than kill him or turn him, Dracula utilizes Renfield to ensure the safe delivery of his earthen boxes and the securing of properties around London (although, it was Jonathan Harker who actually made the trip to Castle Dracula). Renfield has gone mad due to the Count's influence, and has several key abilities and pseudo-powers accordingly:

  • Increased FASE: Renfield is shown to be far more agile and strong than the typical man, either due to his madness of Dracula's powers. Renfield can easily shrug off a man larger than himself or escape from a straight jacket.
  • Thrall of Dracula: Renfield is the thrall of Dracula - As such, Dracula can see through Renfield's eyes, and utilizes Renfield to perform tasks that Dracula cannot or chooses not to. Renfield is in telepathic communication with Dracula, although, Renfield has the tendency to speak out loud. The bond is considered mostly unbreakable, although Renfield can resist Dracula's control at times with a successful Yellow PSYCHE Feat. When in the thrall of Dracula, Dracula may spend his own karma to affect Renfield's results and behavior, and can actually spend karma *against* Renfield's results to enforce compliance.
  • Telelocation: Dracula: It is clear that Renfield knows where Dracula is at most times, and can find his way to his master at different points. The range of the telelocation is Rm (30). Dracula also knows where Renfield is at most points.

Contacts
Renfield's contacts before Dracula have nothing to do with him. After the travel to the Count's castle, Renfield has Dracula as a contact - but it is not an equal contact. Renfield theoretically has Dr. John Seward as a contact.

Limitations
Renfield has the following limitations:
  • Notoriety: Renfield is known as the sole survivor of the Demeter/Vespa, and was obviously mad from the experience
  • Dracula's Slave: Renfield is the (un)willing slave to Dracula, which means he must do Dracula's bidding at all times.
  • Madman - Renfield is obviously a madman, and is known as such.

Leadership*
Mystic Origin*
Mesmerism
Knowledge: Home Area
Knowledge: Ancient History
Knowledge: London
Business/Finance
Knowledge: Vampirism*
Knowledge: Important People
Law*

Powers:
Master Vampire:
Dracula is a master vampire, capable of many feats and abilities due to his vampiric nature. Dracula has shown (In the 1931 version) to have the following powers:

  • Vampirism: Dracula require blood to sustain his lifeforce and power, as he says it, The Blood is the Life. Dracula is insatiable, but selective of the victims he chooses, usually either taking someone who is not missed or someone who is vital to his plans (like Renfield, the Flower-girl, Lucy Westerna, and the various crew aboard the Vesta). Dracula gains health by feeding off of an individual in equal exchange, renewing vitality. Dracula drains health and endurance ranks, as well as potentially infecting someone with vampirism through an exchange in blood. Such beings are lesser vampires, who are under the thrall of Dracula and must do his bidding (As seen with Lucy Westerna)
  • Transformation: Dracula can change his shape into a wolf, bat, or mist. Although shown in the movie only to be capable of changing into a bat, Renfield was very clear he saw Dracula as mist, while Harker and Dr. Seward saw Dracula and then as giant wolf. For the purposes of the write-up, Dracula requires only a round to change into his forms. Please consult the advanced Judges book for write-ups on standard wolves and bats. For the mist, Dracula reduces his mass to Shift 0, passing through small cracks or other openings. Dracula’s mist form appears blood red, as it was mentioned in discussion from observers.
  • Dracula is immune to damage from normal means, requiring blessed weapons, holy objects, or the other means to damage them. Dracula is considered resistant to physical attacks that are not magical in nature, suffering no loss of health, stun/slam/stagger effects, and will not suffer kill results, within acceptable reason.
  • Hypnotism: Dracula’s greatest power displayed is his hypnotism,, granting him Rm (30) ability to hypnotize opponents. Dracula can place post-hypnotic commands which include actions and amnesia as necessary. Dracula also reduces the willpower of anyone he has successfully mesmerized by -1CS.
  • Animal Control: As mentioned in detail by Renfield, Dracula commands lesser creatures such as rats with Rm (30) ability, summoning swarms of them as necessary. Dracula seemingly can control such swarms with little difficulty, and can summon up to three swarms in a single round of 1 — 100 rats per swarm, if Renfield’s observations are believed.

Contacts:

Dracula utilizes only a few contacts in his initial appearance: His brides, victims, and Renfield.

Limitations:
Dracula has many limitations, including:

  • Unholy Nature: Dracula, cannot stand the presence of the relics of divine faith: crucifixes, holy water, the sacramental host, and other items. Dracula can be driven from a place with a holy object, as well as being barred from some locations with wolfsbane.
  • Notoriety: Dracula is well-known in occult circles and in his home region, where everyone seems to know him as a vampire. As Van Helsing said, the greatest strength Dracula had was the fact no one believed he was a vampire or that vampires are known. Dracula’s notoriety however is clearly a problem, hence his travel in secret.
  • Reflection: Dracula casts no reflection and becomes extraordinarily agitated when shown his reflection. Dracula must immediately make a Psyche FEAT at -2CS when shown his reflection or burst into anger.
  • Enemy: Dracula has clearly made an enemy of Professor Van Helsing.
  • Arrogance: Dracula is arrogant to the point of folly. Dracula’s arrogance in underestimating his hold on Renfield and his human opponents leads to his downfall.

Powers:
Vampire: Bessie is a vampire, spawned by Dracula himself, and has all of those cool vampire powers. For a full run-down of those powers, please see the main site's entry on vampires.. Bessie can totally do all of those things, and she's got a cape....so it's very vampire-like.
Cow Abilities:Bessie also has natural abilities related to a cow. At one point a crazy scientist tried to use Bessie's cow abilities combined with her vampire abilities to create an army or find immortality or something....I don' really remember, but it was a Deadpool team-up, so there.

Bessie theoretically is the spawn of Dracula, although I'm not certain he'd admit this.
Deadpool thought she was cool, so it's possible Deadpool might be called?

Talents:
The Alien Horror is able to absorb knowledge, memory, and skill from any creature it possesses or 'reads'. The Alien Horror has displayed the following skills, but it is assumed that it has access to a wider variety of knowledge and skill:
Biology
Chemistry
Detective/Espionage
Hunting/Gathering
Astrogation
Metallurgy
Engineering
Knowledge: Alien Cultures
Knowledge: Human Prehistory
Knowledge: 19th Century nobility
Knowledge: 19th Century era culture

Powers:
Alien Life-Form: The Alien Horror is a an energy-based life-form which was marooned on Earth about 20,000 years ago. Due to its unique nature, the Alien Horror cannot interact with the environment in its natural state: It must take a host in order to affect the majority of the physical world. Caught in the body of an early ancestor of modern man, the Alien Horror was frozen until inadvertently thawed in the early 20th century. The Alien Horror is assumed to have the follow abilities:

  • Energy State: The Alien Horror exists as a state of energy, and in its purest form, is immune to all physical types of damage and most standard energy forms.
  • Psionic 'Vampire': The Alien Horror can move freely from host to host, possessing them and draining their knowledge. As such, the Alien Horror is considered to have evolved with great psionic abilities. The Alien Horror can possess a host with Mn (75) ability, which also acts as Mind-Drain and Telepathy, as it devours the intellect of the host, killing them.
  • 'Zombie' Animation: Any victim drained by the Alien Horror can be 'raised' as a zombie-like servant, who is connected to the Alien Horror directly. The Alien Horror has been shown to be able to control upwards of 8 - 12 individuals at any given moment. The 'zombies' are not true undead in the traditional sense, and cannot be controlled through zombie control/undead control.
  • Total Memory: The Alien Horror retains all information it gains from hosts and victims, and can call upon that information easily with Mn (75) ability.
  • Linguistics: The Alien Horror can speak any language its hosts know, and maintainst these languages permanently.

Contacts:
The Alien Horror has no contacts

Limitations: Despite its nature and abilities, the Alien Horror has many limitations:
  • Host: The Alien Horror must have a host in order to affect things in the physical world. Once the Alien Horror has taken a host, the eyes of the affected drain completely of color, looking blank and white. In addition, when in low light, the primary host of the Alien Horror glows red, with the Alien Horror unable to hide or conceal this affect. Furthermore, should the host perish while the Alien Horror is inside of it, the Alien Horror must make a Psyche FEAT at -6cs, no Karma, in order to survive. Theoretically, the Alien Horror could jump to one of its minions, but as seen with the ending of the film, should the minions be destroyed, the Alien Horror cannot leave. Furthermore, the Alien Horror seems to have range in which it can affect a possession, usually line of sight or one area. The Alien Horror is also bound to its primary host's condition: For instance, the Alien Horror could not escape the initial host as it was frozen, thus conditions and powers like Suspended Animation could trap the Alien Horror indefinitely.
  • Bright Light: Either due to a weakness in its non-corporeal state or a side-effect of its possession, the Alien Host cannot leave or possess anyone while bathed in bright light. Furthermore, any activities are at a -2cs while bombarded by Bright Light of Ex (20) intensity or greater.

Mystic Origin*

Knowledge: Nobility
Knowledge: History - Central Africa
Knowledge: History - Ancient
Knowledge: Culture
Resist: Domination*

Powers:
Vampire Lord: Mamuwalde was directly sired by Dracula, and has many of his powers and abilities, mastering his nature very quickly and through strength of will. Mamuwalde's mastery of his vampirism is not as complete as he would like, but is very, very formidable. Mamuwalde has the following abilities:

  • Vampiric Immunity: Mamuwalde has the same immunities that a master vampire has, that is invulnerability to normal kinds of damage as well as complete immunity to toxins, poisons, or standard disease. Mamuwalde has shrugged off bullets and/or normal attacks without even being stunned or slowed. Fire affects Mamuwalde, but he will not take direct damage from it.
  • Master Vampire: Mamuwalde can create lesser vampires through the standard process, which requires him to drain both health and endurance ranks from a victim to Pr (04). Should Mamuwalde drain an opponent, he can choose to turn them, which he does with a Psyche FEAT. Unlike other types of master vampires, Mamuwalde's victims will turn anywhere from thirty minutes to 72 hours, depending (Lisa, the reincarnation of his love turned within 30 minutes, while Mamuwalde's first victim turned within 48 hours). Mamuwalde's thralls cannot act against Mamuwalde, and are under his complete control. Mamuwalde has been shown to have up to ten (10) thralls at one time, perhaps more.
  • Natural Weaponry: Fangs: Mamuwalde can penetrate up to Rm (30) material strength, halving body armor.
  • Transformation: Bat: Mamuwalde can transform into a giant bat, but not the other forms generally associated with vampires.
  • Hypnotism: Mamuwalde can hypnotize targets with Rm (30) ability, and can also read target's minds once hypnotized.

Adaptable: Perhaps the most dangerous ability Mamuwalde has is his ability to adapt to his time and culture. Mamuwalde's ability to 'blend' into society makes him formidable. In addition, Mamuwalde is known for his charm, which he uses to disarm opponents as to his nature. Neither of these abilities are 'powers', but certainly are significant.

Contacts:
Mamuwalde cultivates contacts easily, and chooses his allies carefully. Mamuwalde will use his thralls to make inroads where in needs to, and one can assume he will quickly make numerous contacts.

Limitations:
Vampiric Limitations: Mamuwalde has many limitations to his powers as a Master Vampire. Sunlight will destroy Mamuwalde, while garlic and holy symbols will ward him off. Mamuwalde will not show up in mirrors or any electronic or photographic device. In addition, Mamuwalde has unusual features as a vampire reflecting the unnatural aspects of his condition, which are only apparent when he uses his powers or feeds.

Devotion to Wife: Mamuwalde is incredibly devoted to his wife, and when faced with the prospect of un-living without her, chooses permanent death. Mamuwalde will stop at nothing to be reunited with his wife, and will destroy anyone who threatens her.

Wanted: Due to the events of the first Blacula movie, law enforcement is at least aware of Mamuwalde and his activities.

Vulnerable to Voodoo: Mamuwalde is at a -2cs for resisting actual voodoo effects, as shown in the movie sequel.

The Brides of Dracula from 'Dracula'

The Brides of Dracula

Names Unrevealed

F: Ex (20)
A: Rm (30)
S: Rm (30)

R: Typ (06)
I: Rm (30)
P: Ex (20)

Health: 120
Karma: 56
Popularity: - 5
Resources: Pr (04)* (Although their resources are actually tied to Count Dracula's, theoretically)

Talents:
Seduction
Hunting
Mystic Origin*
Knowledge: Nobility
Knowledge: Vampire Lore
Knowledge: Area Knowledge - Styrian Mountains
Knowledge: Local Customs

Powers:
As it is assumed that the Brides were made into vampires by Dracula, they share many of his abilities:
  • Vampirism: The Brides require blood to sustain their youthful appearance and fortify their powers, though not the same level that Dracula needs blood. The Brides must feed to sustain themselves, although they can (and have) been shown to feed on animals and smaller beings when necessary (such as Van Helsing's horses). The Brides gain health by feeding off of an individual in equal exchange, renewing their vitality (But they do not require this to maintain their youth). The Brides drain health and endurance ranks, allowing the brides to regain lost health and Endurance ranks in equal amounts. Unlike Dracula, The Brides do not seem to have the ability to infect another being with vampirism as they are shown to be 'lesser' vampires to Dracula, and have been shown to feed off of various beings without turning them into vampires (at least in the novel).
  • Body Transformation: The Brides seemingly can transform their bodies into fine mist, capable of entering the smallest cracks and crevices. The Brides can reduce their mass to Shift 0 and become effectively intangible, but do not seem to share Dracula's ability to transform into animals and the like.
  • Undead State: Like Dracula, the Brides are wholly immune to damage from normal means, requiring blessed weapons, holy objects, or the other means to damage them. Like Dracula, the Brides are resistant to physical attacks that are not magical in nature, suffering no loss of health, stun/slam/stagger effects, and will not suffer kill results, within acceptable reason.
  • Hypnotism: The Brides seem to be able to mesmerize opponents, usually working in tandem as a group. While not as powerful as Dracula, the Brides gain bonuses if they work together, granting them Rm (30) ability to hypnotize opponents. If all three Brides are present, they actually reduce the opponent's Psyche to resist by as much as - 2cs. The Brides are not shown to be capable of planting post-hypnotic suggestions within a target as they are lesser vampires.
  • Wall-Crawling: Although not specifically shown, it's assumed within the conversation between Dracula and the Brides that they probably scale the battlements of Castle Dracula as easily as the count, with Rm (30) ability.
  • Sense Vampirism: As seen in most adaptations, the Brides can sense when one who is infected with vampirism is near, and can directly 'speak' to that person with Rm (30) ability. The Brides can attempt to sway the person to join them, forcing the infected person to make an opposed Psyche FEAT.

Contacts:
The Brides have but one contact, Dracula

Limitations:
The Brides have many limitations, derived from their states as lesser vampires:
  • Unholy Nature: Like Dracula, the Brides suffer due to their nature, although not quite as much as Dracula himself. The Brides cannot stand the presence of the relics of divine faith: crucifixes, holy water, the sacramental host, and other items. In addition, the Brides can be repelled and even driven away from areas which are sanctified accordingly. The Brides suffer a -1cs in the presence of holy objects. Although the Brides seem to have the same limitations that Dracula himself suffers from, it is clear that they are more bound to Castle Dracula and the region, and are not necessarily bound to the specific limitations of invitation and the like. This may simply be that the Brides are never encountered outside of the castle proper.
  • Notorious: The local Styrian villagers are terrified of the Brides, and are fully aware of who and what they are. The Brides suffer a negative reaction from the locals, who know how to protect themselves.
  • Devoted to Dracula: The Brides are devoted to Dracula, either through willingness or compulsion, and only the eldest member (The Blonde in the novels) dares question Dracula's authority. For the other two, they will follow without question.

Count Dracula from 'Dracula' - Jack's Definitive Version

Count Dracula

For the first part, I wanted to distance this write-up from the Marvel write-up, which is difficult if not impossible to divorce from because of how ingrained the media portrayal of Dracula is to the character. It's impossible to sort out the original Dracula from how he has been featured, from the Bela Lugosi version in 1931, to the Christopher Lee Hammer films, and even the anime version. The original version, the supporting characters, and the story set the standard in 'modern' horror, influence writers from HP Lovecraft to Stephen King. King wrote Salem's Lot as a deconstructed Dracula in modern times, and indeed Kurt Barlow is in many ways a modern version of the Count.

In Edwardian England, Dracula was a gothic romance, an invasion novel, and a pulp all rolled into one. While borrowing elements from the older Sheridan Lefanu Carmilla, which many consider Stoker lifting a great deal from, such as the strong Dutch doctor Van Helsing (Van Hessilus) and more as seen in the novella Dracula's Guest. The novel of Dracula influenced the silent film Nosferatu, which in turn influenced the 1931 Dracula, and set the stage of the 'Hollywood' vampire. Dracula has the distinction of being the most filmed fictious character, with well over 200 movies featuring the character. In media, Dracula also has the distinction of being the lead character in the longest running villain-centric comic, Marvel's Tomb of Dracula, as well as being adapted into anime in both Vampire Hunter D and Hellsing, as well as one of the earliest Western Comic adaptations into anime with Tomb of Dracula.

Important Dracula facts:
  • Bela Legosi was buried wearing his Dracula cape.
  • The Marvel version of Dracula is based visually from a production starring Jack Palance.
  • Dracula Guest actually features another vampire, and is more in-line with Carmilla.
  • Dracula has been represented with a heavy to moderate accent, but in the novel it is clearly stated he spoke perfect english with only a slight inflection.

This write-up will focus primarily on the novel version of Dracula with very little influence by other sources, at least I hope, although I'm probably influenced by my recent viewing of 1992's Bram Stoker's Dracula Vlad Dracula

Amassed during generations of study and learning, the Dracula from the novel include several skills not often associated with the later representations of the character. These skills include:
  • Sharp Weapons
  • Leadership
  • Horsemanship
  • Occult Lore
  • Alchemy
  • Business/Finance
  • Athletics
  • Multi-Lingual
  • Demonology
  • Area Knowledge: London

  • Area Knowledge: Eastern Europe
  • Cultural
  • Crime
Dracula however is capable of possessing far more skills, as he has existed for hundreds of years, and kept very current on 'modern' society.
Powers:
Vampire: Dracula is a vampire, an undead being that requires the lifeblood of the living to continue to exist. As a vampire, Dracula has many abilities which compliment his formidable will and various skills. Dracula is caught between life and death; existing but not living. As such, Dracula may perform the following:
  • Vampirism: Dracula requires blood to sustain his youthful appearance and fortify his powers. Dracula must feed constantly to maintain his youth, requiring 1-4 pints of blood every three days to remain youthful. Dracula gains health by feeding off of an individual in equal exchange, renewing his youth and vitality. Dracula not only drains health, he drains endurance ranks, allowing him to renew not only his health but his endurance.
Dracula can infect another being with vampirism, by reducing their endurance to half and forcing them to ingest his ‘blood’, essentially replacing their lost endurance with equivalent of his own lifeblood. The process requires the consumption of 20 points of health from Dracula to the host for the process to begin. Once begun, the victim begins the process of becoming one of the undead over a 7 – 10 day period, with some of the markings and weaknesses of a vampire. Should the victim perish during the period, they will become one of the undead between 1 – 3 days of death, becoming a lesser vampire in the thrall of Dracula. Dracula’s bite by itself will not transform someone into a vampire, nor does his preference seem to work on men as seen by the crew of the ship [the Demeter], who died to the man with none returning as vampires.
  • Shapeshifting: Dracula has the ability to change his shape in a variety of ways, including into a rat, wolf, bat, owl, and a fine fog-like mist. Dracula can grow and shrink from his normal size to a particle, capable of entering or exiting through any crack or crevice. Dracula can reduce his mass to Sh 0 and gain natural weapons: Bite and Natural weaponry: Claws (both at strength) while in his animal forms.
  • Undead State: Dracula is wholly immune to damage from normal means, requiring blessed weapons, holy objects, or the other means to damage a vampire to truly damage him. Dracula cannot be harmed through physical attacks that are not magical in nature, suffering no loss of health, stun/slam/stagger effects, and will not suffer kill results, within acceptable reason. For the most part, Dracula is considered to have Am (50) resistance to damage, as well as not having the need to breathe, sleep, or sustain himself outside of the need for blood.
  • Hypnotism: Dracula’s ability to mesmerize his opponents is phenomenal, even functioning while incapacitated or ‘asleep’. Dracula can mesmerize and control the actions of those around him by simply making eye contact, possessing Am (50) ability to do so. Dracula can plant post-hypnotic commands with a simple FEAT against the opponent’s Psyche, rather than Intuition.
  • Vampiric Control: Dracula can command and control those individuals who have either been turned into a vampire or infected by Dracula directly. Dracula can command those undead with a simple Psyche FEAT, and can influence the actions of individuals that Dracula has forced to drink his blood or drained. Dracula is considered to have telepathy equal to -1cs of his Psyche rank with his victims, and is capable of both reading their minds and using them in a form of clairvoyance and Claudience as to activities and such. What Dracula do thralls see and hear, Dracula sees and hears.
  • Weather Control: Dracula can control the weather with Rm (30) ability, causing massive storms, impenetrable fog banks, and winds. As seen in the early arrival at the Borgo pass and later onboard the Demeter, Dracula can easily cause the weather to bend to his will.
  • Necromatic Magic: Although only addressed In Dracula’s Guest and the early stages of the novel itself, Dracula had learned ancient mystical arts such as necromancy and alchemy, and it was suggested that Dracula had used such to become a vampire. While Dracula did not display such powers overtly, Dracula could be considered proficient in mystical abilities. Dracula was stated as being a student at Scholomance, the legendary school in the Hungarian mountains that was run by the Devil.
  • Wall Crawling: Dracula is capable of scaling sheer surfaces ‘Like a spider’, with Rm (30) ability, often cited by Jonathan Harker as being reminiscent of a large spider or bat.

Contacts:
Dracula, despite the potential to having legions of the undead at his beck and call, is rather limited to who he can call upon for assistance. The local gypsies that serve Dracula could be called upon, and while abroad Dracula made use of various agents such as movers, shippers, barristers, and the like. Despite it all, Dracula has no real contacts or allies.

Limitations:
Despite all of his powers, Dracula is limited in several ways:
  • Unholy Nature: Dracula cannot stand the presence of the relics of divine faith: crucifixes, holy water, the sacramental host, and other items. Dracula can be repelled and even driven away from areas which are sanctified accordingly. Dracula will suffer a -2cs in the presence of holy objects.
  • Rules of the Undead: Dracula is bound by certain rules that govern his status: First, Dracula cannot cross running water and can only cross at low tides. Second, Dracula cannot enter a place or location without being invited (Leading many to speculate it was the necessity of Jonathan Harker’s visit). Third, Dracula must rest on his home earth to regain strength, which means he must have large crates of his home soil with him. If the soil is blessed or sanctified, then it is unable to be used. Finally, while Dracula can endure sunlight, he is locked into the form he has taken prior to dawn and cannot shapeshift until dusk. In addition, if Dracula is at rest, he is completely incapacitated, and can only truly find rest during the daylight hours.
  • Dracula's Arrogance: Dracula is extraordinarily arrogant, and he's been thrown off his plans and plots, and often times in the novel that his own arrogance was his undoing.
