The Scarecrow (Straw Man) from Marvel Comics

"Heeheeeheheeehehehehee"

The Scarecrow/The Straw Man/countless other names throughout history

F: Rm (30)
A: Rm (30)
S: In (40)
E: Am (50)
R: Gd (10)
I: Rm (30)
P: Mn (75)

Health: 150
Karma: 115
Popularity: - 5 (As an eerie avenger), - 10 (To occultists) - 30 (To the cultists of Kalumai)
Resources: Depending on the version depends on the resources. Normally not applicable in the Earth dimension (See below)

Talents:
The Scarecrow is a spirit of vengeance and fear, and has displayed the following talents:

  • Mystic Origin*
  • Psi-Screen*
  • Unarmed Combat
  • Acrobatics
  • Tumbling
  • Knowledge: Demonology
  • Knowledge: Mystical Cults

Powers:
Spirit of Vengeance: The Scarecrow is clearly of vengeance, tied to the mortal world through a large painting of itself. Roused when the blood of innocent is shed against the painting, the Scarecrow animates a lifeless body made of straw and sand to act as a proxy or avatar. The spirit itself is immortal and incapable of being destroyed through normal means, and possesses the following abilities while in its avatar form:
  • Unliving Body: The Scarecrow's avatar is essentially unliving matter - pr (4) material strength to be specific. The Scarecrow is immune to toxins, disease, poisons, sleep or unconscious effects (such as stun), and simply ignores damage effects done to it, unless by fire. The Scarecrow's health can still be reduced to 0, at which point the body collapses and the Scarecrow is sent back to its own dimension for some time. The Scarecrow is essentially immortal: It cannot lose Endurance ranks or suffer from vampiric effects that would drain Endurance ranks as its avatar is only a link to the material world, which can be remade/rebuilt after a period of 24 hours (usually).
  • A being of Fear: The Scarecrow can cause Am (50) fear by laughing, and can freeze individuals in place by locking eyes with them (which forces an opposed Psyche FEAT). The Scarecrow actually thrives of fear, which allows it to raise its FASE when it generates significant fear in a target or targets. For every five (5) targets affected, the Scarecrow gains a +1cs to its Fighting and Agility (Maximum Mn (75)). The Scarecrow can also enhanced or cancel fear effects simply through an act of will if generated by someone else.
  • Plant Control: The Scarecrow seems to have complete control over vegetation, granting it Am (50) plant control, growth, and shrinking. The Scarecrow can twist normal vegetation into horrific shapes (Trees growing gigantic thorns and the like).
  • Telepathy: The Scarecrow doesn't speak (in its first few incarnations) but seems to completely understand and anticipate the actions of those around it 'as if it can read our minds'. For the purposes of this write-up, it is suggested that the Scarecrow has Rm (30) telepathy.
  • Weather Control: The Scarecrow can control local weather patterns with Rm (30) ability, most favorably creating storms and large fog banks in which to strike.
  • Stealth: The Scarecrow has the unnatural ability to not be detected - completely able to get the drop on experienced individuals suggesting it possesses the stealth power and Rm (30).
  • Animal Control: Crows: The Scarecrow has shown it can control crows with Mn (75) ability, allowing it to summon large murders of crows to do its bidding.
  • Other abilities: As it is suggested, the Scarecrow is actually a dimensional entity which acts in the world of man. As such, it possesses a far greater range of abilities in its home dimension or when it can manifest them.

Contacts:
The Scarecrow is connected to three humans who currently share custody of its portrait - Brothers Dave and Jess Duncan, associate Harmony Maxwell, The Thing, and Doctor Strange could be called on as allies.

Limitations:

The Scarecrow has shown several key vulnerabilities:
  • Fire: Fire quickly destroys the Scarecrow avatar, doing an additional +2cs damage and removing an Endurance rank permanently from the current avatar when burned. Fire is the easiest and most direct method of destroying one of the Scarecrow's avatars.
  • Linked to portrait: The Scarecrow is directly linked to the large portrait of itself, artist unknown. The portrait serves as the Scarecrow's conduit between its home dimension and Earth, and it is through the portrait that is is able to draw itself into the world of man. As shown by the team-up with the Thing, the portrait is the sole means the Scarecrow can access our world.
  • Avenger: the Scarecrow is a dedicated protector and avenger of the innocent, and will kill to protect and avenge those who have been wronged. The Scarecrow will not hesitate to do this.
  • Mute: The Scarecrow is mute (Although yes, later, it can 'speak' telepathically).
  • Hideous: The Scarecrow is obviously not human, suffering a -1cs to reaction bonuses.

Eric Draven from 'The Crow' (1994)

Eric Draven

F: In (40)
A: In (40)
S: Ex (20)
E: In (40)
R: Typ (06)
I: Am (50)
P: Rm (30)

Health: 120
Karma: 86
Popularity: (As a member of Hangman's Joke) 2, - 5 (Among Detroit's criminal element after his rising).
Resources: Fe (2) (He is legally dead)

Talents:
Musician
Firearms
Knowledge: Detroit Area
Knowledge: Streetwise - Detroit
Brawling

Powers:
The Risen Dead: Eric Draven was returned from the grave a year after his murder to avenge himself and his fiancée Shelly by supernatural means attributed to a crow. Draven was returned with supernatural abilities to carry out his specific goal. These abilities included:

  • Enhanced FASERIP: Eric Draven was far more agile, strong, and durable than he was in life, hence his increased FASE.
  • Spiritual Connection: The Crow: Although apparently a regular crow, the particular Crow that returned Eric was far more than that. The Crow shared an empathic link with Draven, which explains his greater than normal Intution and Psyche. The crow was the anchor for Draven's power, and as such, anything seen, experienced, or felt by the crow was also experienced by Draven.
  • Undead State: As Draven was essentially undead, he was immune to poisons, toxins, and disease. While the crow was alive, Draven did not need to make stun/kill result checks as he was already dead (Although he could still be slammed and would take 'damage'). Draven healed his End Rank of Damage each round, sealing up wounds within seconds. While Draven was not immune to the damage effects, he could make a simple Endurance FEAT to ignore their effects. Draven also 'regenerated' regardless if resting or in combat, and recovered Endurance Ranks 1 per Round. Draven did not need to eat or sleep after his return.
  • Empath: Although not necessarily apparent, Draven was an empath, capable of sensing emotions ranging from deeply hidden trauma to current emotional states. Draven is able to transfer emotional trauma between himself and others, heal others of crippling injuries and addictions, and 'read' a person's intent or connections. The use of Draven's Empathy requires an Endurance FEAT, which Draven will spend Karma on if the situation warrants (such as completely curing Sarah's mother Darla of Morphine addiction or transferring Shelly's memories into Top Dollar). Draven could also 'read' an object similar to psychometric or postcognition by touch - Items with specific emotional connection to Shelly or Draven during life would be easiest to identify, but would require a Psyche FEAT as the flooding emotions would have a physical/psychic impact on Draven. As an aspect of his empathy, Draven also possessed a type of combat sense which would allow him to anticipate the actions of those around him, most notably seen when facing Tin-Tin. All of these effects are at Am (50) intensity.
  • Hyper-Leaping: Draven could leap between Gd (10) and Ex (20) distances, covering blocks as necessary (and as shown in the police chase). Draven could make a simple Agility FEAT to land without damage or notice.
  • Karma-Loss Immunity: Draven does not lose Karma for killing opponents, and actually gains Karma for killing those responsible for his murder. Draven will not kill indiscriminately, nor will he put innocents in danger. (See Limitations)

Contacts: Although Dead, Draven could rely on two individuals for help and assistance: Sgt. Albrecht (The lead investigator into Draven and Shelly's murder) and Sarah, a young girl that Draven had mentored and considered a friend. Theoretically while Draven was alive, he had connections within musicians circles as a member of Hangman's Joke.

Limitations:
Tied to the Crow: Draven's return was due to the Crow which he was empathically connected to. As Myca, Top-Dollar's Sister/Lover figured out, the crow was the source of all Draven's power. When wounded, it effectively removed the majority of Draven's powers, and made him 'normal'. Draven's FASERIP drops to the following:
F: Typ (06) A: Typ (06) S: Typ (06) E: Typ (06) I: Typ (06)* P: Typ (06). In addition, Draven can be hurt and will not regenerate from damage, nor will Draven be able to access his more combat oriented Empathic powers. As the crow was wounded and not killed, it is uncertain what would happen to Draven should the crow actually die.
Enemies: Draven has several enemies during the short time of his resurrection, including the man who green-lit his murder, Top Dollar, and the majority of the Detroit City Police Department.
Obsession/Purpose: Revenge: Draven is dedicated to finding those responsible for the murders of Shelly and himself, and will go to great lengths to avenge himself on them, even poetic. Draven will kill without remorse any who are responsible, but will go to great lengths to preserve the innocent.
Purpose Completed: Once Draven has completed his purpose, he will return to his rest. Draven will not remain in the land of the living once his goal has been reached, and will simply return to the graveyard in which he awoke.

Pumpkinhead from 'Pumpkinhead' (1988)

'Nothin' can call it off... '

Pumpkinhead

F: Ex (20)
A: Ex (20)
S: Am (50)
E: Am (50)
R: Typ (6)
I: Ex (20)
P: Rm (30)

Health: 140
Karma: 66
Resources: Fe (2)
Popularity: -15 in the folklore of mountain folk

Talents:
None

Powers:
undead Spirit of Vegeance: Pumpkinhead is a summoned spirit, given flesh through a binding of a willing host and a dead body. The creation of Pumpkinhead requires the use of black magic, and has been so far overseen by the mountain witch Haggis. Once created, Pumpkinhead rises and performs a deed of vengeance for the summoner, possessing the following abilities:
  • Telelocation: Victim: Pumpkinhead can track the person who vengeance sought against with Am (50) ability, and will not lose the trail through any means. If people attempt to help the victim or hinder Pumpkinhead, they become bound within the curse as well, and will be dealt with accordingly
  • Undead state: As a spirit of vengeance, Pumpkinhead cannot be harmed easily through conventional means, and possesses Rm (30) resistances to physical and energy damage, and is immune to toxins, poisons, disease, and aging. Pumpkinhead does not need to breathe, eat, or sleep.
  • Terrifying Visage: Pumpkinhead is terrifying to behold, especially to its victims, forcing them to make an Ex (20) Psyche FEAT or stop dead in their tracks.
  • Hypnotic "Voice": As seen in the first movie, Pumpkinhead can mesmerize its victims to emerge from protection or safety with Ex (20) abilty. Pumpkinhead doesn't speak, but the victim hears whispers and it places them in a trance. The sight of a cross or other holy object breaks the trance.
  • Symbiotic Link: Summoner: Pumpkinhead possesses a symbiotic relationship with its summoner, allowing the summoner to see the actions of revenge firsthand with Am (50) ability, even if the summoner doesn't wish to see them.
  • Natural Weaponry: claws: Pumpkinhead's claws can easily shred steel, metal, woods, and stone. Pumpkinhead's claws can do In (40) damage, which is considered mystical as well and it halves body armor.

Contacts:
Although it has no real contacts, it is connected to its summoner and the witch Haggis.

Limitations:
Bound to its summoner: Pumpkinhead is bound to the one who has commissioned the witch Haggis to summon it. The life forces of both are tied together, so to destroy one, someone would need to destroy the other. The summoner's dead body is then used to 'seed' the next Pumpkinhead. If the summoner is stopped or killed, Pumpkinhead dies. At the same time, Pumpkinhead can be killed by his summoner at the cost of their own lives.
Hideous visage: Pumpkinhead has a -2cs reaction bonus even if the psyche feat is made due to the unnatural state of it.
Unholy: Pumpkinhead cannot cross holy spots or enter holy ground due to its nature. Crosses do not repel it, but faith might.
